The Arabian Sea is one of the fastest changing tropical ecosystems on our planet that has suffered a substantial loss of plankton biodiversity due to the rise of the green Noctiluca blooms and their range expansion caused by Eurasian warming, spread of hypoxia and ocean acidification. Noctiluca is a mixoplankton. It is not a preferred food for zooplankton, but instead competes with zooplankton for food. Its emergence therefore, as the dominant bloom forming organism is upending the food web and a fisheries-rich ecosystem that is of great economic and cultural significance in the region. This presentation will provide results from laboratory, field and remote sensing data that are shedding new light on drivers of these seasonal blooms, their range expansion and the threats these blooms pose to regional food, water and national security. We will also show how new knowledge that we are acquiring about green Noctiluca is being used for: 1) developing new algorithms for detection of this organism from space, 2) building new ecosystem modeling capabilies and 3) developing of decision support tools for mitigating large socio-economic losses being caused by these blooms.
