The Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) satellite was launched in July 2014 and completed in-orbit checkout in September 2014. The Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 (OCO-3) payload was installed on the International Space Station in May 2019 and completed in-orbit checkout in August 2019. Both instruments are three-channel imaging grating spectrometers with common entrance optics that acquire eight 1016-element spectra per band at a 3 Hz frame rate. The instruments underwent extensive prelaunch testing to determine parameters such as radiometric gain and instrument line shape. During operations, dark and lamp calibration data is acquired several times per day for both OCO-2 and OCO-3, and OCO-2 also routinely acquires solar calibration data. Inflight radiometry also includes observations of the Moon, targeted observations of the vicarious calibration site in Railroad Valley, NV, and simultaneous overpasses with other satellites. Further insight into other calibration parameters can be obtained by reviewing science retrieval results. Updates are delivered weekly for forward looking and retrospective data streams, with certain parameters updated each time and others only updated between major versions. These calibration activities have ensured the return of reliable estimates of XCO2 from OCO-2 over its 6+ year mission lifetime and are expected to return similar results for the version 10 OCO-3 product, which will be released later this year.
