This review examines the effects of globalization on Southeast Asia's urbanization, land-use, land-cover changes, and environment, based on a diverse set of peer-reviewed studies. The study finds a strong correlation between economic globalization and deforestation in the region, emphasizing the need for further research on the subject. The PRISMA method for meta-analysis is used to investigate over 700 peer-published papers, selecting 58 for in-depth analysis. The findings offer valuable insights into the impact of economic globalization on Southeast Asia's land-use, land-cover change, and environment, and provide important directions for future research and policy decisions. The study suggests that economic development, driven by export-oriented production and induced by globalization, is followed by deforestation thus affecting the value and benefits of ecosystem services. Furthermore, many studies note that the environmental protection standards in developing countries are generally less strict than those in developed countries, making them a target for many low-value and high-pollution industries. By analyzing results from a wide range of studies, this review identifies patterns and relationships that may not be immediately apparent in individual studies, providing a basis for further research which can help in making informed policy decisions. In doing so, it also presents a holistic snapshot of global linkages, such as trade and knowledge flows, on urbanization, and land cover change, both locally and globally.
